An Augustinian Reality and Hope

This is not how it should be but…

Heroes will eventually save themselves. Mothers will abandon their young. Brothers will turn against brothers. Police men will accept brides. Preachers will preach for prosperity. Teachers will occasionally teach lies. “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”

Fathers will beat their children mercilessly. Teenagers will drink themselves past wisdom. Obama will promise another unachievable promise. Judges will lock up the innocent. Dictators will continue to oppress. Nations will again drop bombs. “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. ”

Singers will sing songs about evil. Bankers will continue to steal money. Ron Paul will eventually fold. Wives will cheat. Children will steal. The rich will continue to hoard their riches while others starve. “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.”

Artists will paint evil pictures. Companies will exploit the poor. Lobbyists will get their way in Washington. Conservatives will turn the country back to the Stone Age. News anchors will not tell the whole story. Husbands will abuse their spouses. “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.”

Professors will teach one-sidedly. Friends will betray their friends. Terrorists will continue to bomb villages. Comedians will make fun of truth. Surgeons will cut too deep. Mayors will run towns into the ground for selfish gain. “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.”

Liberals will erode values until they’re gone. Doctors will prescribe the wrong medicine. Dealers will still deal their poison to the young. Alcoholics will continue to drink their “pain” away. Fire fighters will save their own skin. Soldiers will shoot the unarmed. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Students will cheat on their exams. Rapists will find their victims. Scientists will yield the sword of atheism against theism. Athletes will take steroids. Priests and Levites will continue to walk on by. Young girls will abort the child. “And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.”

Politicians will lie, cheat and steal. Pornographers will still degrade people. Men will still oppress women. Leaders will fail to lead. Families will euthanize the elderly. Saints will sin. “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”

The glories and the beauties and the wonders of the Gospel and the grace of Christ are never as precious to us if we have not seen them against the backdrop of the utter depravity and sinfulness of humanity. Even our own sinful plight. Light shines the brightest when things are the darkest. Trusting the LORD  makes sense when all things are considered.
